"Prayer"

I am captive on a Scarran freighter, and not even Djancaz-Bru will help me.

My only hope is John, out there somewhere. I know he's devoting his strength, his mind, and his love to finding me. I imagine that if I'm killed, he'll die as certainly as my unborn child will.

If it weren't for the two of them, I could end this. But their lives are at stake, too. The Scarrans' torture is killing me; this is the pain that's keeping me alive.

The Scarran captain, Jenek, began my interrogation with a heat probe. He wanted to know everything I knew about Crichton. I called on all my Peacekeeper training to resist him, but I passed out too quickly. Vreena, the traitor Sebacean nurse who works for Jenek, thought my weakness was odd. She ran some tests and discovered my pregnancy.

When Jenek heard the news, he suspected the child was Crichton's. He became convinced that the fetus might be carrying Crichton's wormhole equations as incumbent knowledge in its DNA. If so, Jenek hopes that Scarran scientists in a place called Katratzi can extract that knowledge.

So that's where we're going.

The Scarrans took me to a ward on the freighter containing several women from different species. Confined next to me was Morrock, who said she'd been impregnated six times for Scarran breeding programs. She claimed she had stolen enough sleeping pills to kill herself but lacked the courage to take them alone.

Jenek and Vreena soon returned, determined to learn whether the child was Crichton's. They gave me a truth drug. I claimed the child was sired by Velorek. I have a clouded memory of Jenek killing Morrock's latest fetus in the womb, and of Morrock screaming in agony and grief.

Later, Morrock offered me half her suicide pills. The Scarrans returned before I could respond to her offer.

They had taken a DNA scan of my child, but it told them only that the child's father was not a species they recognized. I told them that the father was Lechna of Vendrall, my lover while I was away from Moya. That lie lasted until they confirmed that the DNA was not Vendrall in origin. Then they drugged me and increased the pain....

John ... my child ... both of you, please know that I've done my best. But it was not enough. Forgive me.
