COLARTAS

Colartas are tall, dark-skinned creatures with claws and fangs. Their senses are extremely acute, making them outstanding hunters. [ COLARTAS ] Whether hearing distant weapons fire, scenting the species of prey they are pursuing, or seeing the heat signature of their hidden quarry, their abilities are formidable. They are of average strength, but even a shot through the heart may not kill them: They have more than one heart.

For all these reasons, Peacekeepers employ Colartas for missions involving search and recovery — or search and destroy. Colartas are not precisely mercenaries, but neither are they the Peacekeepers' slaves. More often they are indentured servants, bound to accomplish a certain number of missions successfully to earn their freedom. In some cases, a failed mission invalidates their previous successes, forcing them to start over. A Colarta who is working for the Peacekeepers is therefore likely to be an extremely determined and dangerous creature. Even when weakened by injury or — in the case of the Colartas that Talyn's crew encountered — by unusually strong gravity, they will pursue their mission until they succeed or die.

I have also heard that Colartas have some degree of expertise in disguise, but I do not know if this is true.
