PILOT

Pilot "controls" Moya in one sense; in another sense, they're partners.

Pilot's physically joined with Moya in a symbiotic relationship. He lives in a dark, inner chamber, [ PILOT ]called a Den, deep within Moya. From his midsection down, he has merged with Moya's various conduits and synapses. He is, literally, a part of the Leviathan, to the extent that if Moya were to die, Pilot would shortly die, as well.

I asked him if his wasn't a lonely and boring existence. He was surprised I'd think so. He said his species is incapable of spaceflight any other way, though he didn't say why. He added that it's a great honor for a Pilot to be "chosen" (that's the word he used) to be joined with a Leviathan.

Pilot described for me what spaceflight is like from his perspective, tied into Moya's senses: It's a wondrous, exhilarating experience, soaring from star to star surrounded by the perfectly quiet, celestial beauty of the galaxy. He made it sound like he was the one flying free in space, and we poor passengers were the blind and cooped-up ones.

Huh! I went in pitying the guy and walked out envious. Go figure.
