scorpwanna's Piece of Dren Pulse Pistol
(the Poor Man's Pulse Pistol)

Ok so like everyone who's got Farscape on the mind and wants a Pulse Pistol bad enough and can't afford the to expensive ones on Creationent is starting or has already made one of their own. Well here's my piece of dren that I'm currently making/may never finish.

(For those with no money, here's what you can do too!)

Section 1

Materials used:
  • Dremel (with crappy bits and stuff)
  • A pen
  • Sand Paper (various grains)
  • TV Footage of Farscape
    (Screen shots n'stuff)
  • A 2 by something block of a pine board
  • Some paintball goggles (eye protection)
  • Paper towels (stuffing up my nose to keep out the crap as I'm dremeling)
  • Imagination
  • Wood Filler (for covering up mistakes)
  • Wood Glue (Why I'd need it? Sniffing? heh, just kidding)
  • Plain Paper (to draw on)
  • Jigsaw (for cutting out what I don't feel like dremeling)
  • Some screws
  • Spray Paint

These are some images I took after someone in the chat asked me how I was doing on making the crappy Pulse Pistol. (It looks better than this now)

Section 2

First off I should of taken pictures as I was creating it but I had no idea if I would actually go through the whole thing. I figured I would start on it and not really get anywhere. However, I began to actually start seeing something being created with the wood.

Ok, so I got like this 2 by 6 by 8 or 9 piece of a pine board left behind when some carpenters added a room on to our house. First, I like watched a lot of Farscape again, pausing the VCR and capturing images on to my computer using my video card. When I got what I needed from that, I got the clipboard with paper on it and drew out an outline of what I thought resembled the way the pulse pistol looked on TV.

Next, I got the ol'e jigsaw out sat it aside for the time being and placed the paper down on the wood and used a pen and chicken scratched really hard on the paper making it outline on the soft pine wood. Once that was done I got the pen again and filled in the soft line that the indention from the chicken scratching in the paper caused. Using the jigsaw now, I jig sawed my way around the wood to saw out the shape of the pulse pistol. Now it was time to draw the look of the pulse pistol on the wood. I so suck at this! Wood cutting and carving out stuff like this isn't something I knew how to do, nore do I even know how to still! Whittling ain't my thang!

Section 3

Ok on with the show this is it!... After drawing on both sides of the wood now cut into the form of the pistol. It was time to get out the goggles the paper towels and the dremel (which I lacked experience in using one and had no good bits to use with it either).
I'm not going to get into detail of what I cut and where and when, cuz I dremeled on the pistol every evening I got home. Carving out here, cutting off there, smoothing here, sanding there. It was a very painful experience and bad on the back! Hunkered down balled up for hours with goggles that you can barely see out of during the summer is intense! But I kept on going.
One thing I forgot to account for when I was dremeling and stuff was the chalkin cartridge release that's located on the left side of the pulse pistol. So now when im done with most of it ill have to go back and find a way to make it.

Section 4

I in no way am claiming that the piece of crap that I am currently making is good for anything except perhaps a door stop. I just got really really board and don't think paying 300 bucks for a piece of plastic at creation is worth it. But I want one so bad!!!
K nuff with the rambling, on with the making. After I pretty much cut around enough just to make it resemble the pistol, I'd spend a little bit of time each day sanding on it. (Remember this is made out of a solid piece of wood) Evening upon evening I'd be using a knife at times just whittling out areas I thought weren't right.
Finally, the look of the wood was close enough for me. It looked sorta like the pulse pistol on Farscape and I was just happy. So I said, "The hezmana with this" and gave up on it for a few months. I have now recently started back work on it saying to my self "I need to finish this thing sometime in the next month!"

Section 5

Now since I've decided to continue to finish this thing I call a pulse pistol. I needed more sand paper and wood filler to fix the crap I messed up during the dremel process.
So I went on a trip to Wal-Mart, gathered my junk I needed and started work on the pulse pistol again. At times I felt like throwing the thing through the wall because it sucked so much. Other times, I was like "I can do this, I can do this!"
I'm not saying this page will or might help you in creating your own pulse pistol, I'm just telling you some of what I went through making one. If only the price of those on creation would drop to like 50 bucks, I'd buy one! At times during making one of these I kept telling myself "You must not be much of a scaper if you're not willing to spend 300 bucks on something of it!"

Section 6

Things I missed, things I noticed that looked completely stupid on the pistol I was creating.

Ok, currently I've painted the handle flat black not the real color of the pistol and that I'm now using a black magic marker to color the areas that I am totally done fooling with (Soon will paint them)! I've noticed that the oval sides above the hand grip should be wider, the lower half should be more narrow, the handle itself should be straightened up and cut out better. I have no patience! The Horizontal cuts on the top side part should be straighter, the Horizontal cuts on the bottom side parts should be deeper and wider. The whole thing just sucks now that I think about it. But, dangit! I'm gunna finish building it! AND Dangit, I'm Just gunna save up that thar 300 smack'a-roos!

New Scans of Left and Right side
(the side cylinder is not mounted yet, tell me it doesn't suck cuz it does! heh)
I guess once I paint it fully it will hide crap that sucks!

FINISHED!!!
