In a recent discussion in the chat we talked about
Season 4 being aired in wide screen format and why the previous seasons
had not. Though it's a fact that it's been said that Season 1-2 were filmed in Standard
format (full screen) and not in the typical now-a-days wide screen. Even
the DVD's being sold were in full screen. I only own some episodes from
Seasons 1-2 none from Season 3 or 4. Why you ask? I'm waiting on the
price to go down. Anyhow, our topic reached Season 3 and a friend of
mine in the chat had Season's 1-4 on DVD. When Season 3 aired in the US it
was in full screen format, and my friends DVD's of Season 3 were as well
(full screen). So I got to thinking and remembering a sequence of
footage in the Opening Credits of Season 4. A shot from Season 3 that
was in Wide Screen format. So I then thought, "Why aren't they
selling the Season 3 DVD's in Wide Screen?" Are they wanting to
save the Wide Screen's for a special release later on? I know that some
people don't like Wide Screen because it gives off the black bars on top
and bottom of standard Televisions (as it does on mine). However, I
enjoy Wide Screen because you see more of the footage.
Like when you watch a film on the big screen, you see the letterbox/wide screen format as it was originally shot. When you rent the film or buy it on VHS or DVD you may buy the Full Screen version which has been modified to fit the screen (ie the left and right sides cropped off to fit your 4:3 ratio TV). I on the other hand buy the Wide Screen version because it is more Original and you see the whole film. So... Below are snapshots and video from sources of Farscape footage from Season 2 & 3 Episodes and the Season 4 Opening Credits. In the left column are snapshots from episodes which aired in the US. In the right column are snapshots from the Season 4 Opening Credits which aired in the US. As we all know Season 4 was aired in Wide Screen. But what if there's a Season 2 and 3 out there in Wide Screen? Those of us who like Wide Screen I'm sure would love to own those episodes on DVD. For a video reference of each clip click on one, a popup window will appear allowing you to download and view each clip and see the differences. This requires that you have Javascript enabled and have the Quicktime plugin. The video clips are under the 100kb byte size so they shouldn't take long to download. There are more sequences in the Season 4 Opening Credits but I figured this would be enough for now. |
