Most people who see my nickname/online name/web-name/internet name seem to think it has something to do with the show Farscape, well, it doesn’t at all actually. I’ve been using the online name of Scorpwanna ever since the mid 1990s. You see, I was and still am a huge fan of Mortal Kombat, to which my online name originates. Back in those times, Dial Up internet was mostly the only way online for the average home user, Mortal Kombat was brand new, my favorite character was Scorpion.
When the game came out, I never had the chance to play it in Arcades like everyone else. I had to wait until it was available for console. Any information I could find about the game came from magazines only. One day in the 90s when we finally got the internet, I looked online for any new information about the game. I came across the Mortal Kombat Forums/BBoard and began to create an account. “Scorpion Want To Be”. It said it was too long, I was sad, so I tried “Scorpion Wannabe” and it accepted it. I would post and talk to other people who were interested in the game, I wish I would have saved those web pages from back then. After a year or so, the forums changed the length of a member’s name. I had to change it to something shorter. I tried “Scorpwannabe”, it failed, I tried “Scorpwanbe” but didn’t like the look of it. Finally “Scorpwanna” would be the accepted name I would use and it has stuck with me throughout my internet days.
A fun little factoid, during the run of Farscape, the production team, cast & crew, would visit the events.scifi.com IRC Chat Server and talk to us fans occasionally. During the first Season and before the Final 4 episodes were announced, those from the show would see my username sitting in the #Farscape chat room and ask if I was so-n-so from the set, or if I was a guy named Wayne. I had no idea at the time who this Wayne person was until the Final 4 episodes had aired. I did make them aware that I was just a fan and “Scorpwanna” was my username that I had used for years. They were like “oh, okay :)”.
So there it is, the boring origin of my nickname, online name, etc…
