OCCULARS
Aeryn has these things called occulars. They look like headphones and, basically, occulars do for your eyes what hearing aids do for your ears. I pop them on and it's "instant telephoto lens."

Only the lens isn't in the occulars themselves; somehow these things manage to amplify the power of the lens in your own eyeball. My vision shoots up from 20/20 to 200/20 instantly. A temporary upgrade to my optic nerve -- makes me feel like I'm seeing on steroids.

[ OCULARS ]It must have something to do with the way my brain processes all the info traveling in through my eyes. Maybe the oculars over-stimulate my neurons. Or there could be diffusion of a funky assortment of chemicals crossing in through my temples.

I asked the others how these things work. Aeryn got all huffy about me messing with her Peacekeeper gear. "Those occulars were not intended for use by creatures of questionable brain capacity," were her exact words, I think.

Then Zhaan, in all her infinite wisdom, piped in with "Don't hurt yourself, John. You're a long way from any familiar technology and your curiosity could easily have dire consequences."

Ever since I exploded that ridiculous pulse rifle they all treat me like I'm in kindergarten.
